The Royal Canadian Mint continues its extraordinary “Great Hunters” series with a third installment dedicated to one of Canada’s most intelligent and iconic predators: the gray wolf (Canis lupus). The 1 2025 oz fine silver coin, minted in Ultra High Relief (UHR), shows an impressive scene from the perspective of the prey, masterfully capturing the agility, strategy and teamwork of this species.
Design and Meaning
A work by renowned artist Emily Damstra, the design depicts a gray wolf leading a chase through a rocky Canadian forest landscape, turning mid-run with other pack members in tow. The choice of this angle is no coincidence: it allows the viewer to see the wolf's tense body, its gaze fixed on its prey, and highlights its incredible adaptability and agility.

The artist comments: “I chose to show the wolf in the middle of a turn because it demonstrates his agility and allows us to see his body as he looks directly at the viewer. Whatever he's chasing, he better run!”

A technical challenge turned into art
Konrad Wachelko, the project's engraver, describes the challenge of balancing aesthetics with the technical limits of Ultra High Relief. "You have to think several steps ahead, anticipating each tool and finish. If you do that, the design flows perfectly."
