Since ancient times, the figure of the mother has been a symbol of life, fertility, and unconditional love. In 2025, the Clube da Medalha do Brasil is launching a commemorative medal celebrating this sacred heritage with a limited-edition artwork: the Mother's Day Medal.
This medal honors not only today's mothers, but also the ancient tradition of maternal veneration in diverse cultures, from classical Greece to the Catholic Church.

Origin of Mother's Day
In ancient Greek and Roman civilizations, motherhood was already a cause for celebration during spring rituals. In Greece, the Titaness Rhea was considered the Mother of the Gods. In Rome, the deity Cybele, known as Magna Mater, symbolized the creative force of nature.
With the expansion of Christianity, maternal worship became a Catholic tradition. During the Middle Ages, the faithful celebrated the Laetare Sunday, the fourth Sunday of Lent, visiting the church where they were baptized and offering roses to the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus. This custom is still alive in the United Kingdom, where it is known as Mothering Sunday.
In America, Mother's Day was institutionalized in 1908, thanks to activist Anna Jarvis, who honored her deceased mother by presenting white carnations. The initiative was officially adopted in 1910.
In Brazil, the first ceremony took place on May 12, 1918, in Porto Alegre. In 1932, President Getúlio Vargas made the date official, establishing its celebration on the second Sunday of May. In 1947, Mother's Day was incorporated into the liturgical calendar by the Brazilian Catholic Church.
