A tribute to the Filipino-Canadian community
Canada is home to one of the largest and fastest-growing Filipino communities in the country. Their contributions to society are reflected in areas such as the arts, education, health, and numerous community development initiatives.
This coin seeks to recognize that contribution through an artistic composition inspired by values such as resilience, unity, and bayanihan , a Filipino tradition that represents mutual support and collective work.
A design full of symbolism
The piece features an elaborate circular design composed of various traditional Filipino motifs:
Obverse
The obverse features the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III , designed by Canadian artist Steven Rosati . Around the portrait are inscriptions indicating the year of issue, the face value of 200 Canadian dollars , and the traditional legend DG REX (“By the Grace of God, King”), characteristic elements of contemporary Canadian numismatic issues.

Reverso
The reverse, designed by Filipino-Canadian artist Bert Monterona , features an elaborate composition of concentric rings that represent different aspects of Philippine culture and the enduring values of resilience and unity.
The outer border features a rope motif symbolizing the strength that comes from interconnectedness and diversity. Below this is a band of triangular patterns inspired by both the mountain ranges of the Philippines and the traditional flags used in popular celebrations, evoking the festive and resilient spirit of the Filipino people.
The next ring incorporates the Sarimanok , the mythological bird associated with migration, adaptability, and perseverance. Further toward the center are intertwined hearts representing the love, compassion, and deep sense of community that characterizes Philippine culture.
On the inner rings, Canadian sugar maple leaves blend harmoniously with okir plant motifs , a traditional Philippine ornamental style, symbolizing the union between the two cultures. Finally, at the center of the design, a genuine mother-of-pearl inlay crowns an engraved sun representing the freedom, unity, and cultural richness of the Philippine archipelago.
According to Bert Monterona, the concept originated from the idea of a wheel in motion as a symbol of development and progress. To unify all the elements, he chose a rope, representing that which connects and strengthens different cultures. The artist also explained that he has incorporated Okir and Sarimanok motifs into his work since 1984, while the alternating hearts occupy a special place within the composition, representing a universal symbol of love and humanity, a reminder that no nation or community can be built without these values.

Genuine mother of pearl as centerpiece
One of the most distinctive aspects of this issue is the incorporation of natural mother-of-pearl at the center of the design.
This material has been used for generations in Philippine crafts for its iridescent luster and its association with the archipelago's natural wealth. The Mint also includes an independent certificate authenticating the mother-of-pearl used in each piece.
